4 Things You Should Ask Yourself When You Are Feeling Depressed?

H.A.L.T.  (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired)

When we are trying to be creative, it is very difficult if we are dealing with something that is interfering with our flow.  As artists, we are more susceptible to the highs and lows, I get it! It hits me as much as it hits you, believe me. I have found, as I go through life, when it seems like everything is falling apart, or I have an important decision to make, I can use HALT to help me recognize what is happening and what is interfering in my success. So, let’s take a look at HALT and see how it can help you get through the highs and lows.

HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired)

  1. Hungry, when was the last time you had a meal?

Hungry- That seems like a silly question, but some people have a hard time paying attention to their brain’s messages. Especially something as simple as hunger. Hunger can cause you to make bad decisions, react in anger (when you normally would not) and it can definitely interfere in your ability to relax and enjoy your craft. So, ask yourself if you could be hungry. If you think that is the problem, grab yourself a good source of protein and rejuvenate yourself! I recommend protein, because that has the most stick-to-itness. LOL I’m not sure if that is a word, but I’m using it as one! Carbs may give you a false sense of satisfaction, leaving you to crash and burn shortly after consuming them. Stick with proteins for a good, solid renewal of energy.!

  1. Anger, it rears its ugly head at all of us from time to time.

Anger-Can be debilitating and can leave you exhausted. It’s time to deal with what is making you angry. You can confront your anger, deal with it and put it behind you, or you can let it ruin your day. Personally, I would rather deal with my anger and kick it to the curb!  That way the rest of my morning or afternoon can be dedicated to what I love to do! Because I’m a Dad who Draws! LOL

  1. Loneliness- Don’t isolate yourself

Loneliness- When is the last time you had a good visit with someone? If you’re feeling lonely and it’s been a while since you spent time with someone else…find someone to visit with. Even if it is only for a few minutes. You will be surprised how quickly you can recover from loneliness. Seek out your spouse, your kids, co-workers or even the UPS driver! Take a minute to chat, share a cup of coffee! Go for a walk with a friend. Physical activity can be extremely rejuvenating, even a short session will make a difference. This can lead to a happier state of mind and a new, creative you!

  1. Could you be too Tired to create?

Tired- Did you get enough rest last night? Sometimes, even when we get a good 8 hours of rest in, it doesn’t mean we slept or slept soundly for all of that time. So, self-evaluation is the key here. Did I sleep for 8 or more hours last night? Did I sleep soundly? Am I just feeling tired and worn out? If you determine that you may actually just be tired, then I recommend a nap! LOL Don’t set yourself up to fail…listen to your body. If you’re tired, or you’re hungry, feed yourself! Either food or rest, you are “feeding” yourself with the things you need to succeed.

Ok, that is my input for this morning. I hope this will prove to be as helpful to you as it has been for me. Remember, Practice! Practice! Practice! And, of course, Perseverance! The keys to your success.  So, keep drawing, just keep drawing (15 MINUTES A DAY!).
